Free amino acids and reducing sugars participate in the Maillard reaction during high‐temperature cooking and processing. This results not only in the formation of colour, aroma and flavour compounds, but also undesirable contaminants, including acrylamide, which forms when the amino acid that participates in the reaction is asparagine. In this study, tubers of 13 varieties of potato (Solanum tuberosum), which had been produced in a field trial in 2010 and sampled immediately after harvest or after storage for 6 months, were analysed to show the relationship between the concentrations of free asparagine, other free amino acids, sugars and acrylamide‐forming potential. The varieties comprised five that are normally used for crisping, seven that are used for French fry production and one that is used for boiling. Acrylamide formation was measured in heated flour, and correlated with glucose and fructose concentration. In French fry varieties, which contain higher concentrations of sugars, acrylamide formation also correlated with free asparagine concentration, demonstrating the complex relationship between precursor concentration and acrylamide‐forming potential in potato. Storage of the potatoes for 6 months at 9°C had a significant, variety‐dependent impact on sugar and amino acid concentrations and acrylamide‐forming potential.  相似文献

A detailed study of the interaction of chitin molecular species with the solvent system N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc)/lithium chloride (LiCl) allowed the development of a new method for chitin fractionation by coacervate extraction. The controlled increase of the extracting power of the solvent was carried out using slight modification of the solvent composition. Partial extractions of molecular species were done between coacervation and complete dissolution limits using different mixtures of DMAc/LiCl of increasing extracting power. Fractions were characterized in DMAc/LiCl 5% (w/w) by viscometry and size exclusion chromatography with refractive index and multi-angle laser light scattering detectors. Fractions obtained by coacervate extraction range from 80,000 to 710,000 g mol−1 with polydispersity index between 1.28 and 1.44. The Mark–Houwink–Sakurada equation constants a and K for chitin in DMAc/LiCl 5% (w/w) were found to be 0.95 and 7.6×10−5 dl g−1, respectively.  相似文献

通过对广西九万山植物资源的考查和研究 ,发现该地区分布有珍稀濒危植物 1 9个科 ,2 8个属 ,共 2 9种。其中国家一级保护植物有 5种 ,国家二级保护植物有 2 4种。对它们的种类组成、区系成分、地理分布进行了分析 ,结果显示出广西九万山珍稀濒危植物不仅种类繁多 ,而且具有古老、原始、孑遗特性 ,热带性质明显 ,中国特有现象极为突出等特点。据此提出对广西九万山珍稀濒危植物的保育对策 ,以便更好地保护其生物多样性和这些珍稀濒危植物资源的可持续利用。  相似文献

Honeybees, Apis mellifera, have been introduced by man throughout the globe. More recently, other bee species including various bumblebees (Bombus spp.) have been introduced to several new regions. Here we examine the impacts of honeybees and the bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, on native flower-visiting insects in Tasmania. To assess whether native insects have lower abundance or are excluded in areas that have been colonised by exotic bees, we quantified the abundance, diversity and floral preferences of flower-visiting insects at sites where bumblebees and honeybees were present, and compared them to sites where they were absent. This was achieved by hand searches at 67 sites, and by deploying sticky traps at 122 sites. Honeybees were by far the most abundant bee species overall, and dominated the bee fauna at most sites. There was considerable niche overlap between honeybees, bumblebees and native bees in terms of the flowers that they visited. Sites where bumblebees were established had similar species richness, diversity and abundance of native flower-visiting insects compared to sites where bumblebees were absent. In contrast, native bees were more than three times more abundant at the few sites where honeybees were absent, compared to those where they were present. Our results are suggestive of competition between honeybees and native bees, but exclusion experiments are needed to provide a definitive test.  相似文献

We examined the foraging strategy and quantified the foragingtraits of two nocturnal rodent species, Allenby's gerbil (Gerbillusallenbyi) and the greater Egyptian sand gerbil (Gerbillus pyramidum).In the laboratory, both species used two distinct foragingstrategies: either they immediately consumed seeds found ina patch (seed tray); or they collected and delivered the seedsto their nest box for later consumption. Moreover, we founda transition in foraging strategy among individual G. allenbyi under laboratory conditions; they all began by consuming theseeds on the tray and, after 7 days on average, switched tothe collecting strategy. By contrast, in the field both speciesused only one foraging strategy; they collected and deliveredthe seeds to their burrow or to surface caches for later consumption.Furthermore, G. allenbyi and G. pyramidum collected seeds atsignificantly higher rates in the field than in the laboratorybecause the seed encounter rates for both species were higherin the field. This suggests that in natural conditions, probablyinvolving predation risk and competitive pressure, gerbilsmust respond in two ways: (1) they must choose a foraging strategythat reduces predation risk by minimizing time spent feedingoutside their burrows; and (2) they must forage more efficiently.In the field, seed handling time of the larger species, G. pyramidum, was shorter than that of the smaller one, G. allenbyi.This difference may give G. pyramidum an advantage when resourcelevels are high and when most of a forager's time is spent handling seeds rather than searching for more seeds. Additionally,our field study showed that the seed encounter rate of G. allenbyiwas higher than that of G. pyramidum. This difference may giveG. allenbyi an advantage when resource levels are low and whensearching occupies most of the forager's time. The differentadvantages that each species has over the other, under differentconditions, may well be factors promoting their coexistenceover a wide range of resource densities.  相似文献

According to their traditional classification, the Jinuo's community forests consisted of watershed forest, auspicious forest, sacred forest, shellac forest, village/clan boundary forest, fire protection forest, burial forest and swidden fallow forest. Every type of forest was managed through traditional regulations. The village or clan headman and his assistant were the representatives to implement the traditional management system. Because it was popular with local villagers and there was strict punishment of offenders, the management system was effective. In recent years, the constantly changing forest management policies has not helped either to preserve biodiversity, or to develop forestry. Instead, forest ecosystems have been destroyed. After studying the community forests in the Jinuo community, the authors strongly recommend that the indigenous forest management system be strengthened. Modern forestry policy itself cannot implement sustainable, productive forestry and conserve biodiversity unless it is combined with the indigenous management system of the community.  相似文献

Reproductive output of the stinkbug predator Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was investigated as a function of the number of matings that the male had made with a range of females. After being placed with a female, virgin males were most likely to mate within 12 hours, while non-virgin males were most likely to mate within 12–24 hours. Although males lost weight during their first mating, the weights of mated and unmated males were not significantly different throughout their lifetime. Longevity was significantly greater for unmated males (36.0 days) than for mated males (29.8 days). Survival curves for both mated and unmated males were Type II. The capacity of males to transfer sperm to virgin females was not affected by previous matings. From 65.7 to 76.4% of eggs were viable and 206.7 to 274.6 nymphs were produced per female. Regardless of the number of matings that the male had made, females that had mated only once exhausted their stored sperm progressively and produced an increasing proportion of infertile eggs, which peaked at the end of their lives. These results show that P. nigrispinus females need more than one mating to maintain fertility, but their performance is not affected by the number of previous matings that the male has made or by male weight. Thus, the strategy of pairing with males multiple times improved production efficiency by increasing output and reducing food waste in mass production systems. This is achieved by temporarily pairing females at intervals of about 20 days during their entire lifetime.  相似文献

The Asian Tiger Mosquito Aedes albopictus arrived in the USA in 1985 in used automobile tires from Japan and became established in Texas. This species has since spread to become the most abundant container-inhabiting mosquito in the southeastern USA, including Florida, where it has reduced the range of another non-indigenous mosquito, Aedes aegypti. To assess the accuracy of predictions that A. albopictus would competitively exclude the native Eastern Treehole Mosquito Aedes triseriatus from tires but not from treeholes (Livdahl and Willey (1991) Science 253: 189–191), we extensively monitored the abundances of mosquito immatures before and after the Asian Tiger invaded these habitats in south Florida. These field data failed to demonstrate exclusion of A. triseriatus from treeholes following the establishment of A. albopictus in this microhabitat in 1991. However, A. albopictus had significantly higher metamorphic success and showed a significant increase in mean crowding on A. triseriatus in treeholes monitored from 1991 to 1999. In urban and suburban sites, A. triseriatus was uncommon in abandoned tires even before the arrival of A. albopictus. In some wooded sites, there is evidence for a decline in numbers of A. triseriatus in used tires and cemetery vases, but the native species has not been excluded from these habitats. Overall, the negative effect of A. albopictus on A. triseriatus has been less severe than that on A. aegypti. Experiments outdoors in surrogate treeholes showed that A. albopictus was more successful than A. triseriatus in survival to emergence in the presence of predatory larvae of the native mosquito Toxorhynchites rutilus when first instar predators encountered both prey species shortly after their hatch. Eggs of A. albopictus also hatched more rapidly than those of A. triseriatus, giving larvae of the invasive species an initial developmental advantage to escape predation. Biological traits that may favor A. albopictus are offset partly by greater treehole occupancy by A. triseriatus and the infrequency of the invasive mosquito species in undisturbed woodlands, which mitigates against displacement of the native mosquito in these habitats.  相似文献

In complex areas of international policy, such as biodiversity conservation, there is a risk that well-promoted strategies will be received by decision makers as a cure-all. The U.S.-based Conservation International is promoting biodiversity hotspots as a 'silver bullet' strategy for conserving most species for least cost. We assess the degree to which this goal is compatible with four social values that characterize the conservation movement. We find that biodiversity hotspots provide only a partial response because conservation does not treat all species as equal. We argue that explicit recognition of such values is fundamental to a structured debate contributing to the development of a common strategy for biodiversity conservation.  相似文献
